Zhejiang Institute of Science and Technology is a key university that established a variety of disciplines based on engineering. Current disciplines include sciences, engineering, literature and art, economics and law, each enjoying special features and all developing in harmony. Under the supervision of the central government, the university is administered by Zhejiang provincial government.

Now it is on its way to expand and reach its authorized strength of over 11,000students. Situated in Hangzhou.The school now occupies two campuses, one in downtown Hangzhou and the other in the newly constructed Higher Education Park near Qian Tang River. The university employs a high-quality faculty of over 1,000 among whom more than 320 are professors and associate professors, 8 are part-time academicians. In 1999,the school underwent a name change, from the former Zhejiang Institute of Silk Textiles to the present Zhejiang Institute of Science and Technology.

ZIST grew out of the Sericulture Academy which was founded in 1897 and was one of the very first modern educational institutions in China. It has continued to develop as an institution of higher education. It acquired the right to grant master's degrees. In 1995, it became involved with Zhejiang University in co-educating graduate students working towards a doctoral degree. Authorized by the Academic Degrees Committee under the State Council, ZIST acquired the right in 1999 to grant master's degrees to working people who have the equivalent education level.

The provincial government has set up key labs, engineering centers, and research and development centers in the university. Its library, a treasure house of books in various subjects , is ranked as one of the most influential clothing information centers in China. Its academic journals, such as Zhejiang Institute of Science and Technology Journal, Modern Textile Technology and others are published nationwide.
